Luca,
On October 14, 2008, at 12:32 AM, after much anticipation, you arrived. We waited almost two whole weeks. And from your very first moment in space, you were surrounded by new friends, all over the place! Mama and Baba, Auntie Carla, Grandpa Bill, Great-Grandma Tutu, and Aunt Vicki and Uncle John were all waiting to welcome you to your new home.
And then a year went by. We learned a lot as parents, and you learned a lot as a new person. From eating, to playing, to walking about. And your first words! I've been so happy to be with you to share these moments and to be happy with you. It brings me such delight to see you smile and to play with you.
Both Mama and I love to nap with you. You're so warm and cuddly!
Your first apple-picking!
Maybe one day you'll play the piano? You look so proud sitting at the piano all by yourself!
And you had your first steps just a week before your birthday!
We had a party for you with our family and friends last Saturday, and you had another one at your preschool today, too!
I look forward to spending more time with you, playing, laughing, and eventually talking. I'm sure you'll have a lot to talk about. You already do! We have so many hopes for you, and we are already so proud of you. And to paraphrase the book we read to you in utero, Oh, Baby, the Places You'll Go!:
Daddy
P.S. In commemoration of your first birthday, I have dedicated our journal to you. We started it after we found out about you, and it's really for you and our family. I also created a new photo album called "Luca's Photos", since you are almost not a baby any more!

You'll find that this world'sI love you, my son.
a great place to begin,
but it could use some help-
which is where you come in...
The words I am saying
you hear in your heart,
and know that I wish you
the very best start.
It's a scrumptulous world
and it's ready to greet you.
And as for myself,
I'm so glad I could meet you!
